You may have noticed the increased level of work along Alafaya Trail from Avalon Park Boulevard to the area just North of the light at Eastwood. Please note, this is NOT the widening of Alafaya Trail. Below is an email I recevied from Orange County after inquiring about the recent clearing of trees.
Response from Orange County
There are two projects presently clearing trees along Alafaya Trail. These are Orlando Utility Commission (OUC) 230 kV Transmission Line and the City of Orlando Eastern Regional Reclaimed Water Distribution System. These are described below:
Orlando Utility Commission (OUC) 230 kV Transmission Line
Recently, OUC began clearing trees in the vicinity of Innovation Way and the west side of Alafaya Trail for the construction of a power transmission line. The OUC 230 kV Transmission Line extends from OUC's Stanton Energy Center power plant to the Progress Energy East Orange Substation, located south of Lake Underhill Road and east of the Lockheed Martin facility.
The transmission line is being constructed within existing OUC property and easements, which are 70 feet wide. The transmission line alignment crosses Innovation Way just west of Alafaya Trail and continues north on the west side of Alafaya Trail. The alignment continues on the south and west side of Alafaya Village and the south and west side of the Stone Forest subdivision. Thereafter, it continues north along the west side of Alafaya Trail, crossing Curry Ford Road west of the Walmart Neighborhood Market to the Progress Energy substation.
City of Orlando Eastern Regional Reclaimed Water Distribution System
The City of Orlando is constructing a portion of the Eastern Regional Reclaimed Water Distribution System on Alafaya Trail. This work consists of the installation of a 42-inch reclaim water main from the Iron Bridge Water Reclamation Facility to Orange County Utilities (OCU), Eastern Regional Water Reclamation Facility. The City's contractor has installed the 42-inch reclaimed main across Alafaya Trail at Golfway Boulevard. They will continue to clear trees along Alafaya Trail to install the 42-inch reclaimed main from Golfway Boulevard to the entrance to the OCU facility.
Community Meeting with Potential Impacts on the Future of Innovation Way and South Alafaya Trail Residents and Businesses
Please note that there is a community meeting regarding the Innovation Way East (IWE) Development of Regional Impact on Thursday, January 7 at 6:30pm at Moss Park Elementary School at 9301 N Shore Golf Club Blvd.
I encourage South Alafaya Trail residents and business owners to consider attending this meeting (second of three scheduled community hearings) as the owner of this property is the same financing partner responsible for building Road 'E' as well as the future Interchange at Alafaya Trail and the Beachline. It is my opinion that if IWE does not receive their requested land use changes, which are within the Innovation Way guidelines established by Orange County, then they will not have an economic incentive to expedite the Interchange.
